A GUIDE TO SAN
Reference Sheet
Material Safety Data Sheet
What is SAN?
SAN is a copolymer of styrene and acrylonitrile.
What are the properties of SAN?
The
acrylonitrile units of SAN increase the temperature resistance
and stiffness with respect to polystyrene itself. The chemical
resistance is also improved through molecular immobility,
i.e., molecules of solvents which might attack the material
are prevented from penetrating the molecular chain. SAN is
quite amorphous and transparent. SAN has very low water
absorption and is not chemically attacked by water. Here is a
summary of SAN properties:
- low impact strength
- high stiffness
- fair chemical resistance
- moderate heat resistance
- transparent
- low price
- easy processing
How is SAN used?
SAN is
commonly used in applications that are in contact with water.
It will resist boiling water as well. SAN is used as a
blending resin with other polymers such as PVC or ABS to
change the flow characteristics of the polymer. It is often
used as a carrier resin for additives such as pigments to be
incorporated in other polymers. Applications of SAN include
the following:
- decorative bathroom fixturing
- cosmetics packaging
- blood handling equipment
- specialty housewares
- appliance knobs and fixtures
- appliance drawers and shelving
- water filtration housings
